Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Woody Allen’s new film featuring Penelope Cruz, Scarlet Johansson, Javier Bardem, and Rebecca Hall, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night to great acclaim. The film was greeted with rapturous applause and a standing ovation.
The romantic comedy sees Cruz as the jealous ex-wife of painter Javier Bardem –her real-life boyfriend. She seduces Johansson after Bardem meets her and British actress Rebecca Hall, who play US tourists in Barcelona.
The highly-charged seduction, thought to be intended by Allen as his most erotic scene ever, takes place in a red-tinted photography darkroom and is the prelude to a menage-a-trois with Bardem.
One critic at the late-night viewing said: “It woke up all the dopey critics and practically got a standing ovation.”
