Lisa Leff from the Associated Press reports that the sponsors of a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in California said that they have amassed enough signatures to get the measure on the November ballot. Protect Marriage, a coalition of religious groups (shocking), collected more than 1 million signatures. The initiative required only 694,354 signatures. The supporters of the initiative are to deliver the petition to county registrars this week, before of the April 28 submission deadline set by the California Secretary of State’s Office. The signatures must be verified before the amendment can be approved for the election.

Same sex couples are not allowed to legally marry yet, but the coalition wants a ban written into the state’s Constitution. The California Supreme Court is set to decide in June whether the current law restricting marriage to opposite sex couples is legal. If passed by a majority of voters, the constitutional amendment would overturn a court ruling that might be in favor of gay marriage advocates. Recently, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger voiced his opposition to the amendment, and said he would actively oppose it if it were go to the November ballot.
