More Transgendered News from India

April 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Last night we reported the transgendered fashion show from Kalkota (Calcutta). Today we bring you new news from the SouthWest state of Tamil Nadu, in the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. The Times of India reports that, for the first time in the country, a special database of Indian transgenders will be created by the state’s government to gather information about transgender needs and the problems they face. Social welfare minister Dr Poongothai said that, in collaboration with an NGO, the database would have comprehensive details on transgenders. Dr. Poongothai said, “We are starting the work with an NGO in this regard. We should hopefully have it ready in a couple of months. It is a unique initiative and is being done for the first time in the county. Once we have the data, we shall look into the issues that transgenders face and try our best to resolve them.” Tamil Nadu was the first state in the country to recognise transgenders as a separate gender and issue ration cards to them. It is assumed that passports are likely to follow.
