James Schamus is set to be honored at this year’s Media Awards from Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), this Saturday, April 26.
Schamus, a producer at Focus Features, is set to produce the next feature gay film, called ‘Taking Woodstock,’ based on the life of Elliot Tiber, the gay New Yorker who made Woodstock history. The film will be directed by his longtime collaborator Ang Lee. James Schamus and Ang Lee have produced such films as, ”The Wedding Banquet,” ”Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman,”, “The Ice Storm,” and, probably what is considered the most important gay film ever, “Brokeback Mountain.” Focus is also producing “Milk,” the story of Harvey Milk.
Schamus told Variety, that if he wanted to play it safe, he would only make movies with gay Chinese cowboys since he has had the most success with “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Brokeback.” But he’s found that deviating from the norm often works best. ”When we’ve parted ways with formula, we’ve done pretty well,” he says.
Schamus admits homophobia is an issue, but says it shouldn’t be a deterrent. The problem, he asserts, is not the homophobia itself but “the assumption that homophobia has an effect.
