Yesterday we celebrated John Cameron Mitchell’s birthday, and today we celebrate John Waters 62nd birthday. Waters is well known as a writer, director, and actor of his campy, cult classic films such as Hairspray (the original), Serial Mom, Cry-Baby, and Pink Flamingos. His characters are awesomely filthy, immorally moralistic, and morally immoralistic. Details recently asked him to describe his coup of mainstream when Hairspray became a huge Broadway hit, which is also happening to Cry Baby. He said,
“Yes! It’s evil! I won in a sneak attack. They’re watching two men sing a love song to each other, they’re celebrating interracial dating—all the things they think they’re against. It’s the only radical thing I ever did, Hairspray. It makes fat girls stars.”
