Gay and Lesbian Couples Communicate Better

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

New research by leading couples researchers John Gottman, Julie Gottman, and Esther Rothblum suggests that same-sex couples are more honest about monogamy and sex. When discussing relationship concerns, coupled queers are also more mature, considerate and fairer to each other than heterosexual couples. They also are seemingly funnier, more affectionate when they argue and less controlling. In January, two large studies found much the same — including that same-sex partners are generally happier than their straight siblings who are married. The researchers suggest that the process of coming out requires increased honesty, and thus probably translate to better communication and more honesty in relationships.

The Gottmans are famous couples researchers, and have recently reported on their 12 year longitudinal study on gay and lesbian couples, and how they cope with relationship and intimacy problems. Their approach to studying heterosexual couples was unique 20 years ago, when they started bringing couples into rooms, set up like living rooms with furniture, and getting couples to discuss the course of the relationships and relationship problems. Couples are observed for supportive communication strategies and the way members bring up, discuss, and resolve issues of significance.
