Cedric Ragot’s Reverson Tables

Designer Cedric Ragot has designed an awesome range of multifunctional occasional tables that eschews the usual4 legs for panels of 3 with the main support structure highlighted in bright red. The design allows free-from arrangement. Turn them on their sides to create whole new spaces and configurations. If you don’t move them around, you could potentially used the red support leg as a cool asymmetrical book shelf.

Now, fido has also issued a press released stating they will start offer iPhone 3G starting July 11, 2008. Pricing will be CAD$199 for 8GB or CAD$299 for the 16GB version. Both will required a 3 year contract! No word on if they will offer the phone without contracts with a higher price.

On the other hand, Rogers is accepting pre-orders for the iPhone!  Whatever model you want (8GB/16GB Black/16GB White).  A $50-100 deposit is required and you will get your phone within 1-5 days after the launch date.

No detail on Voice/Data plan has been officially released. But we assume it will start around the $70/month range.

Read fido’s new release here.

So what’s new about the 3g iPhone?

  1. Price! The price will be USD199 for 8GB version and USD 299 for 16GB(black or white).
  2. 3g. Fast mobile internet. 2.8 times faster then EDGE.
  3. GPS. Build-in Assisted GPS system for realtime accurate positioning.

Here’s a list of disappointments:
  1. No flash! The iPhone still can’t take photo at night
  2. No camera at the front. Yes. No video conference / video call unlike most 3g phones in the market.
  3. SAME 2mp camera.

quicktime required for viewing the new iPhone 3g ad.

For the first generation adapters, if they don’t really need 3g connectivity and GPS, there’s no good reason to upgrade. The star of this update is not really hardware, but the new iphone 2.0 software which can be downloaded for free after July 11 if you have the first generation iPhone.

So what is iPhone 2.0 software? It’s the operation system that runs your phone. Much like XP for window and OSX for mac. This new software will provide much enhancements to the iPhone experience and functionalities.
  • exchange mail support
  • contact searching
  • iWork document support
  • Office document support (now includes PowerPoint)
  • bulk delete and move for Mail
  • save images you receive
  • scientific calculator in landscape mode
  • parental controls
  • language
With the new software, iPhone user will be able to download all types of Application from itunes. Anything from 3D games, blogging to eBay.  Here’s some to look forward to:

Sega Super Monkey Ball

Initially previewed at the SDK launch, Super Monkey Ball now includes over 100 levels. In playing through the last world, Sega demonstrated how they used the iPhone’s accelerometer to control the movement of the character.

Loopt

Loopt is a location-aware social networking app that displays a map with pins representing where your friends are. User profiles can show a log of where you’ve gone and its simple to blog, send in a photo, text, or call your friends.

Pangea Games

Pangea Software is bringing 2 games to the iPhone. The first game is Enigmo, which is a physics-based game. The second game is Cro-Mag Rally, described as a “cave-man racing game.” Both applications are priced at $9.99.

Band

An independent developer from the UK developed Band that includes a virtual piano, drums, 12-bar blues “instrument”, and a bass. And you can record when you play any of the great sounding instruments.

eBay

Post, Manage, Browse your eBay listing with this native app. The app’s main screen allows you to quickly view the auctions you’ve listed, have bid on, or have been out-bid on. It also includes a custom photo viewer.
The same 2.0 software will be a 9.99 upgrade for iPod Touch users.

Ora Unica by Denis Guidone

Click on the photo below to view the full gallery

Denis Guidone has been selected as the winner of the international design competition Adamo Eva. From Yanko Design:

His whimsical scribble watch design called “Ora Unica”, meaning One Hour, is a wonderful contrast of chaos and order mixed together. In their words, “The hour and minute hands are represented by a single line drawn on two circular faces, which turn one inside the other. Both faces together resemble a graphical gesture, a doodle that changes as time passes.”

Check out the gallery above to see how the ends of the scribble represent time.

Fashion designer, Yves Saint Laurent, died at the age of 71

Yves Saint Laurent, the French fashion prodigy at the House of Dior who redefined women’s haute couture with his own label in the 1960s and influenced a generation of designers, died late yesterday from the effects of brain cancer, at his residence in Paris. He was 71.

During his almost 50-year career, the Algerian-born Saint Laurent liberated women with his pantsuits and simple, yet chic, silhouettes. Known for designs inspired by artists, including Picasso and Mondrian, as well as his creations for French actress Catherine Deneuve in the film “Belle de Jour,” Saint Laurent always saw himself as an advocate for women.

“Fashion isn’t just to decorate women, but to reassure them, give them confidence,” he said when he retired in January 2002, at the age of 65.

Here’s a small gallery of his work. Click on the image below to view.

The son of an insurance company president, Yves Saint Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria. He inherited his fashion sense from his mother. He studied first at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, but felt frustrated by the syllabus so left after a few months. Saint Laurent left home at the age of 17 to work for the French designer Christian Dior. Following Dior’s death in 1957, Yves, at the age of 21, was put in charge of the effort of saving the Dior house from financial ruin.

Shortly after this success, he was conscripted to serve in the French Army during the Algerian War of Independence. After 20 days, the stress of being hazed by fellow soldiers led the fragile Saint Laurent to be institutionalized in a Frenchmental hospital, where he underwent psychiatric treatment, including electroshock therapy, for a nervous breakdown.

In 1962, in the wake of his nervous breakdown, Saint Laurent was released from Dior and started his own label, YSL, financed by his partner, Pierre Bergé. The couple split romantically in 1976 but remained business partners. During the 1960s and 1970s, the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, safari jackets for men and women, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit. He also started mainstreaming the idea of wearing silhouettes from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s. He was the first, in 1966, to popularize ready-to-wear in an attempt to democratize fashion, with Rive Gauche and the boutique of the same name. He was also the first designer to use black models in his runway shows.

Among his muses were Loulou de la Falaise, the daughter of a French marquis and an Anglo-Irish fashion model; Betty Catroux, the half-Brazilian daughter of an American diplomat and wife of a French decorator; Talitha Pol-Getty, who died of a drug overdose in 1971; Catherine Deneuve, the iconic French actress; and the Guinean-born Senegalese supermodel Katoucha Niane, the daughter of writer Djibril Tamsir Niane. Ambassador to the couturier during the late 1970s and early 80s was London socialite millionairess Diane Boulting-Casserley Vandelli, making the brand even more popular amongst the European jet-set and upper classes.

In 1983, he became the first living fashion designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 2001, he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Légion d’Honneur by French president Jacques Chirac.

Saint Laurent retired in 2002 and became increasingly reclusive. From then until his death he spent much of his time at his house.

He also created a foundation with Pierre Bergé in Paris to trace the history of the house of YSL, complete with 15,000 objects and 5,000 pieces of clothing.
